As you walk through Portland neighborhoods, primarily on the east side, you'll see many homes with "Poetry Posts" in their front yards, close to the sidewalks. When I first noticed these posts my first thought was, "that's interesting..."
Shortly thereafter I noticed them much more frequently and I thought: "Wow, these homeowners must have something really beautiful to share or they are all really proud of their child’s schoolwork.”
Now I realize how big this trend is in Portland. It’s so BIG that someone has taken the time to develop a map that plots out Portland’s Poetry Pole locations. Another quirky, yet legitimate characteristic of Portland.
With summer finally upon us, I'm sure there are more poetry poles that are popping up on a daily basis. The sun makes everyone feel optimistic and flowery and the days are longer; which all translates to drinking outside on our porches, front steps, or the couch on our lawn late into the evening. And drinking under the stars—naturally causes poetry to flow from our souls straight onto the poles. ( Hey, there are a lot worse poles alcohol could lead us to.)
So whether you have a pole and want to get yours on the map, or maybe you want to plan an evening stroll filled with poetry—consult this map of poetry boxes, poles, and posts.
Enjoy and be inspired!
